ABSTRACT: MSS and TM/LANDSAT multitemporal data obtained in the near infrared spectral bands disclosed anomalies in the transition vegetation between Amazonian rain forest and Cerrado, Brazilian tropical savannah (Mato Grosso State, Brasil). The visual interpretation of TM/LANDSAT images showed the spatial, spectral and temporal characteristics of these anomalies. Through digital analysis carried out in two test areas, it was no possible to improve the anomaly patterns definition. Spectral parameters were more consistent than vegetation indices in the differentiation between anomalies and the surrounding vegetation. The first observation of this occurrence was done in panchromatic aerial photographs (obtained in 1967), and lately, in the near infrared spectral bands of the satellite images. This fact allowed to infer that the existence of these anomalies is relacioned with the regeneration of the vegetation in these specific areas and demonstrated the application of this spectral bands similar works.
